The Island of Mainau
Mainau, the garden island: a wonderful place best visited by boat.
The garden island with five seasons, a jewel in the emerald waters of Lake Constance.
A mass of luxuriant blooms the whole year through; a park with a stand of trees more than 150 years old; the Baroque splendour of the palace and church; plus a heady Mediterranean feel to everything: this is the Mainau, the floral island in Lake Constance.
There is an awful lot to marvel at on the Isle of Mainau, especially when it comes to botanical gems. The renowned collection of roseswith over 1,200 different types and species is spread over two locations on the island. The best place to enjoy this Queen of Flowers' heady scents and intoxicating beauty is doubtless the Italian rose garden. You can still enjoy a trip to Mainau even when the weather is less than perfect. The sensational butterfly house and the house of palms are both absolutely fascinating.
Take an architectural stroll to see the church of the St. Marien palace, the palace of the Teutonic Order, the gatehouse, the garden tower, the Swedish tower and much more besides.
Mainau is a paradise for children, too. The island has lots of outdoor fun and adventures in store for younger visitors to discover. In the children's fun park the "Water World" "World of Flowers" and "Lilliput" playgrounds provide the perfect chance to let off steam.
